Because all of the exterior walls of our new house are made of concrete, it is extremely quiet inside, especially in the winter months when windows tend to be closed. It makes for a unique kind of hush and I must say that we’re all sleeping well because of it. The fact that we don’t hear the highway traffic that is not far from our front door is a huge plus, but it also means that we miss quieter sounds that we would like to hear.
My husband and I were getting ready to turn in the other night when his ear happened to twig to something unusual outside the window of our bedroom; he called me over and opened the window. For the next few minutes we stood there quietly listening to several coyotes calling to each other across the hills just a stone’s throw from the house. I hate to think we nearly missed that.
